After the intensity of Marrakech, Essaouira is a deep breath. This fortified port on the Atlantic has a compact, walkable medina, blue fishing boats, ramparts straight out of a film set, and the freshest seafood in Morocco — with a fraction of the hassle of the inland cities.
Essaouira is ~2.5–3 hours from Marrakech and best as a 1–2 night break rather than a rushed day trip. Wander the ramparts and medina, eat grilled fish at the port, and enjoy the easygoing, low-hassle vibe. It's windy — great for water sports, bring a layer for the beach.
Getting there
The road from Marrakech is easy and scenic, passing argan groves (watch for the famous tree-climbing goats). Options:
- Supratours / CTM bus — cheap and reliable, ~3 hours
- Shared or private transfer — door to door, flexible
- Day-trip tour — convenient but rushed; an overnight is far better
What to do
- Walk the Skala de la Ville — the sea ramparts with their row of brass cannons and crashing Atlantic surf.
- The fishing port — watch the blue boats unload, then pick your fish and have it grilled on the spot.
- Get lost in the medina — calmer and more navigable than Fes or Marrakech, with great galleries, woodwork (thuya) and argan-oil cooperatives.
- Beach & water sports — the wide bay is a top windsurfing and kitesurfing spot; lessons are easy to arrange.
- Sunset on the ramparts — the light here is the reason artists keep coming back.
When to go
Spring through autumn is reliably pleasant, though always breezy. Summer is the liveliest (and the time of the famous Gnaoua music festival); winter is mild but cooler and windier.
